Breault Reasearch - Taking Light Further

Industry Expertise

Aerospace/Military

Breault Research Organization (BRO) was launched 26 years ago by new Optics Ph.D., Robert Breault, who had just completed a stray light analysis study on the soon-to-be Hubble Space Telescope. That analysis increased Hubble's ability to "see" by a factor of 100,000. We have been helping people manage light ever since. BRO has held key design and analysis roles for programs that include Hubble Space Telescope, Infrared Space Observator (ISO), Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES), X-ray Mirror Module (XMM), and Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO). BRO engineers have worked on night vision systems, missile systems, interferometers, telescopes, and space imaging systems. Our expertise in stray light analysis and optical design for the defense industry ensures peak performance in our clients' products.

Automotive

Using BRO's suite of illumination software products, and an extensive library of source models, BRO engineers lead development of new and efficient automotive illumination systems. We help you avoid costly mistakes by quantitatively evaluating performance of your system and redesigning it before you build expensive prototypes. Recent projects include automotive lightpipes, segmented reflector headlamps, taillights utilizing light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and distortion analysis of automotive dashboards.

Bio-optics

Using BRO's software tools, we can simulate entire biophotonic systems, including devices for drug discovery exercises, molecular biology research, clinical diagnostics, and surgical applications. We design imaging systems, calculate illumination levels and optimize uniformity, and evaluate the effects of volume absorption and scatter on performance of optical systems. Recent projects include design of relay optics in a retinal imaging system, analysis of digital stereoscopic fundus images, design of microarray imaging systems, and modeling of human eye and retinal imagers.

Consumer Electronics

From optimizing LED lighting for toys and computers, to designing lightpipes for scanners, BRO's engineers have a wealth of experience in optics for consumer products. We have designed luminaires and optical imaging systems for photocopiers, as well as optical systems to capture images on white boards. BRO is behind many backlit display designs for pagers and cell phones. Our breadth of experience, coupled with our systems engineering approach, makes BRO the best choice for all your consumer electronic projects.

Display

BRO designs, analyzes, and improves performance of backlit displays. Our experience includes flat-panel displays such as Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) and plasma, projection systems based on micro-displays including Digital Light Projectors (DLPs) and mini-LCDs, and heads-up displays. BRO's engineers are well-versed in all aspects of display engineering. We utilize advanced light sources such as Organic Light-emitting Diodes (OLEDs), develop efficient display screens with minimal light leakage, and optimize transfer optics to make them as efficient as possible, thereby addressing battery longevity, heat issues, and space limitations.

Optical Metrology

Using BRO's own ASAPĀ® Optical Software, our engineers model many types of optical metrology equipment including numerous types of interferometers. BRO's engineers are experts in utilizing full-wave optics modeling capabilities to build advanced optical systems. For example, we designed and built a Mach-Zehnder phase shifting interferometer to evaluate gradient index lenses on a production floor.

Telecommunications

BRO's engineers design and build state-of-the-art systems for telecommunications. We model fiber coupling, birefringence, free-space propagation, gradient index materials, and much more. BRO is your engineering resource for: couplers/splitters, multiplexers/demultiplexers, free-space/guided propagation, fiber analysis, polarization, dispersion, and wave optics.
